Sandy, a 57-year-old Flint resident, said having access to the nutrition trucks "means a lot". She visits them at least 2 times a month and gets food to feed herself and her 30-year-old son. She likes the variety and the availability of fresh produce, especially watermelons and corn.
Terry, 57, goes to the nutrition trucks every chance he gets. Without the food, he says his family wouldn't make it. He said he makes healthier recipes and eating decisions when using the food from the mobile nutrition trucks.
Ken, 71, said the food at the nutrition distributions helps a lot with his groceries bills for his family of three. He visits the sites at least once a month.o Kenya, 39, uses the mobile nutrition trucks at least every 3 weeks. She is most grateful for the availability of fresh produce at the distribution. "This are a great benefit to the community, a huge help," she said.
Anthony, a Flint resident of almost 50 years, visits the mobile nutrition sites several times a month for his family of 4. "This means a lot, I appreciate this food, I had lead in my system, not a lot but I don't want any lead," he said. He feels that he makes healthier decisions and recipes when using the food from the nutrition trucks.
Laura utilizes the help centers and nutrition trucks at least twice a week and actively shares links on Facebook to let people know when and where the mobile nutrition trucks will be. She likes these services because they “ensure that you can get the food that’s good to combat lead while helping with food budgets.” She has often shared extras with people who are immobile in the community or who cannot get to the distribution sites. She says that many in the community have shared recipes with one another to best utilize the lead-mitigating foods in recipes. Residents at HELP Centers:
“The help center is very important to me because they give me water, fresh vegetables and a bag of food to make a lot of things with to tide me over until I get my food stamps.”
Timothy, a resident of Flint, frequents Greater Holy Temple every two weeks to get food and water, as well as take advantage of the health care services offered. He said, “the help centers are great for the community during a time like this, during a crisis.” The food and water is a “big help” to his family of three.
From a Social Worker at a Help Center – I come to pick up food daily for my consumers and it helps them a great deals as they are not able to come themselves. I will continue to come EVERYDAY as long as these blessings are available for my consumers in Flint, thank you!
